What Is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is the process of pushing ink through a mesh screen with a stencilled image onto a substrate such as t-shirts, hoodies, or posters. Screen printing has been around for over 1000 years and generally requires a tedious setup and physical labour to produce the desired result. To print multi-coloured designs, screen print shops must first separate the artwork into its individual colours. Each colour in the logo or image requires its own designated mesh screen that must be aligned or “registered” with one another to recreate the image on the garment.
What Is Direct to Garment Printing?
Direct to garment printing or “DTG” involves a digital printer that applies ink directly onto clothing very similarly to your desktop paper printer at home. DTG utilizes the full gamut of CMYK colours in designs, with water-based inks that absorb into the fabric of the clothing. The main disadvantage of this method is that dark coloured garments must be pre-treated with a special liquid prior to printing to ensure bright, vivid prints. DTG printing works best on cotton dominant fabric. At CCA we will not DTG print on anything less than 60% cotton.
What Are the Differences Between Screen Printing & DTG?
There are some significant differences between DTG and screen printing, but the most significant difference is the technique of putting ink onto the fabric of the t-shirt. The traditional method is screen printing, which uses a stencil and pushes the ink into the material of the t-shirt with that. Direct to garment is newer, and the ink is pushed into the fabric using a printer.

The printing method direct to garment uses digital printing to apply ink and designs onto the t-shirt fabric that you are making. Given we are a digital world in every sense, it suits most people that this newer printing method is used. It’s why it’s gained so much in the way of popularity in recent years. The design is precise, with neat edges and a high-quality level of detail.

You can print very detailed photographs and designs directly to the fabric
Excellent for individual projects or one-off t-shirts for an event
Ideal for smaller batches of t-shirts
Very little in the way of investment up front
Cons:
It’s not particularly cost-effective in large quantities

It’s the classic method of printing that is favoured among most fashion gurus out there. You can create custom t-shirts while transferring the detailed designs of your choice onto the fabric. The production of durable, aesthetically pleasing clothing has evolved over the years, and while screen printing is a process that requires more labour, the saturated colours and authentic appearance of the t-shirts that you have as a result are always worth it in the end.

Which Is Better?
When it comes to designing shirts, hoodies, and more, DTG and screen printing are both excellent options. If your designs are relatively simple and you’d like to handle the printing yourself, screen printing is likely your best bet—especially if you will be printing garments in bulk. If, on the other hand, your designs are colourful and detailed or you plan on printing in smaller quantities, DTG may be a better option.
